Flowable mortar refers to mortar with high fluidity, designed for easy placement without the need for vibration or extensive finishing. It’s commonly used in various daily construction applications where smooth flow and self-compaction are essential.

HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) works in mortar primarily by improving water retention and enhancing workability. As a high-molecular-weight polymer, HPMC forms a mesh-like structure that traps mixing water and encapsulates cement particles. This prevents rapid moisture loss, allowing for slower, more controlled cement hydration, which improves bonding and reduces cracking.

It also acts as a thickening agent. The long polymer chains and hydroxyl groups form a stable film that creates tiny, evenly distributed air bubbles throughout the mix. These bubbles help prevent aggregate sedimentation and improve mortar consistency. As a result, HPMC contributes to better cohesion, smoother application, and long-lasting performance—especially in dry mix and polymer-modified mortar systems.

HEMC (Hydroxyethyl Methyl Cellulose) plays a crucial role in improving water retention and workability in mortar formulations. As a high-molecular polymer, HEMC forms a mesh-like structure that locks in mixing water and coats cement particles. This structure slows down moisture evaporation and allows for better cement hydration, leading to improved bonding strength and reduced surface cracking.

HEMC also acts as a reliable thickener. Its long-chain molecular structure introduces tiny, evenly dispersed air bubbles that prevent aggregate settling and help maintain a uniform mixture. This results in a stable, easily workable mortar with enhanced spreadability—ideal for both dry mix mortars and polymer-modified systems.
